6. Tommaso

The only movie on this month’s list is Tommaso, starring Willem Dafoe. It is based on a true story, although names have been changed to make it more fictionalized. You’ll get a rough idea of the life of director Abel Ferrara.

Defoe plays Tommaso, a filmmaked from Italy who moves to the United States. He leaves his entire family behind and builds a new life with a woman and their child. However, he struggles to focus and cope with diminished responsibility. As he works on his latest screenplay, he suffers a life of addiction that threatens his new comfortable life.

Tommaso is available on DVD and Blu-ray on Sept. 15.

5. Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

The SHOWTIME series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels has sadly been canceled, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without it in your life. Sure, you could keep your SHOWTIME subscription to watch it, or you can get it on DVD and Blu-ray.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is a sequel to the original Victorian-set series, but removes the campy horror for something far more terrifying. It focuses on Los Angeles in 1938. Two gods debate whether humans will create the end of the world. Can they be stopped from their anger and hatred of each other?

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is available from Sept. 29.
