Amazon inks multiple exciting overall and first-look deals
The winter TCAs were a chance for Amazon to share some exciting news on projects and the future of the entertainment side of the things, including new deals.
During the winter TCAs, Amazon shared some exciting but also bad news about projects, confirming the Lord of the Rings cast while confirming The Dark Tower is officially not happening. It was also a time to share news about some new overall and first-look deals.
These deals are with some big names, too, bringing the hope for some excellent projects. The first was with Mozart in the Jungle‘s Gael García Bernal and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s Diego Luna, who are already working on an upcoming Amazon project. They’re executive producers on the Untitled Cortés and Moctezuma Project.
The two have now inked a first-look deal with Amazon Studios, meaning they’ll create and produce content for Amazon. Of course, if Amazon decides not to take the project, they’ll be free to shop it elsewhere, but the idea is to make it something that Amazon viewers are going to want to watch.
According to Deadline, they already have the Untitled Cortés and Moctezuma Project, which is about the clash between Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés and Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II, which would lead to the downfall of the Aztec civilization. It’s a limited series, set to air across four hour-long episodes.
The next deal involved Brad Pitt. Well, more like his company, Plan B Entertainment. This is an overall television deal, making the first exclusive TV agreement for the company. Co-presidents Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner have already agreed on a thriller called Outer Range, and The Underground Railroad, an adaptation of the Colson Whitehead novel, is already in development. The latter is set for release later this year, according to Deadline.
Finally, it’s all about 12 Years a Slave director, Steve McQueen, who now has an overall deal with Amazon Studios. He already has the drama Small Axe coming up, which is another co-production between Amazon and the UK’s BBC, set for release later this year.
There’s also a sci-fi thriller coming, according to Deadline. Last Days will see a world where governments have secretly put together a plan to colonize Mars because Earth is dying. It follows a woman who is at the risk of losing everything she knows and wants to learn the truth about where she came from.
