1. Marshall (2017)

  • Directed by: Reginald Hudlin
  • Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown, and James Cromwell

If you’re in the mood for a biopic… look into the 2017 film starring Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman as the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. The movie focuses on one of the first cases of his career.

The case involves a wealthy socialite named Eleanor Strubing (Hudson) accusing a black chauffeur of sexual assault and attempted murder. Marshall teams up with a local Jewish lawyer, and together they build a defense to protect the accused of becoming crucified by a racist society.

Marshall is an underrated movie that proves how strong of an actor Boseman truly is. Unfortunately, the film was overlooked, and it underperformed at the box office despite garnering strong critical praise. It was also largely ignored by the Academy during the Oscar season and only received a single nomination for Best Original Song, “Stand Up for Something.”

In terms of accuracy, the authenticity of Sam Friedman’s portrayal (Josh Gad) was called into question by his real-life nephew. However, beyond that, many have praised the film for adhering to the historical truth, no matter how bleak.
