6. Friday the 13th (1980)

If you’re in the mood for some horror, might I recommend the classic summer slasher, Friday the 13th? The story takes place at Camp Crystal Lake 20 years after the camp was closed down due to several unsolved murders in the area. But a new owner decides the time is ripe to reopen the place. One by one the new counselors begin to die in brutal fashion.

If you never got the chance to watch the original, now is your chance! If you enjoy it, Prime is even streaming the other F13 films too. You can watch a majority of the franchise with your membership.

5. The Kings of the Summer (2013)

When I think about summer vacation I’m always reminded of high school and the days where I didn’t have to worry about going to work or school. It’s a natural breeding ground for coming-of-age stories so you’ll have to forgive me for adding several to this list.

The Kings of the Summer is a particularly sweet and funny entry. It stars Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, and Moses Arias as three teenage boys trying to claim their independence by building a house in the woods and living off the land. Comedy veterans Nick Offerman and Alison Brie also star.
