When will The Secret Life of Pets 2 be on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Amazon Video?

The Secret Life of Pets 2 hits theaters this weekend and people are super excited to see the follow-up film. But when can you take it home to watch?
If you have kids or you just love animated movies then The Secret Life of Pets 2 has probably been on your radar for a while now. As a follow-up to the monumentally successful first film, the second is already on track to smash the box office this weekend.
The first film was so popular that the sequel could even topple the new X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix, on its opening weekend. Everyone loves to entertain the idea of what their pets get up to when they’re not home so it’s not surprising that these movies would be so successful!
Update: Secret Life of Pets 2 now has a DVD and Blu-ray release date, along with info on the bonus features.

Therefore, if you watched the movie in theaters and enjoyed it or you’re thinking of picking up a physical copy as a gift for a kid (or even yourself) then you’ll want to know when you can buy the movie on DVD, Blu-Ray, or Amazon Video. Unfortunately, given the track record for Illumination Studios other films, it might be a long while before you can do so.
The first Secret Life of Pets was released in July of 2016 and it didn’t come out on home video until December of that year. The same thing happened with Despicable Me 3, which was released in June of 2017 but didn’t come home on DVD and Blu-Ray until December 2017.
However, last year’s Illumination release, The Grinch, had a much shorter turnaround time. The movie came out in November and released on DVD and Blu-Ray in February of this year.
It’s hard to say which pattern The Secret Life of Pets 2 will follow but I’m leaning towards a longer time period, especially if the movie does well in theaters. Studios will want to keep it in cinemas as long as possible and if there is no frame of release for the home video then people will be more inclined to pay to see it at theaters.
Since this film is likely going to be really successful for Illumination, I’m predicting we won’t see the DVD and Blu-Ray release until November or December of this year with the Amazon Video release set a couple of weeks before.
