Amazon has snagged the rights to a hot-ticket item at Cannes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s hijacking thriller, 7500, will be coming to Amazon Prime.

If you’re a Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan or just a fan of thrillers, then you’ll be happy to hear Amazon has cut a global deal to the rights to his latest movie. The film, 7500, will star Levitt as a co-pilot who is flying a plane hijacked by terrorists.

The news comes from a Deadline exclusive, and they’re also reporting that Amazon has purchased competition drama Les Miserables and Joe Penna’s Stowaway7500 will mark the directorial debut of Patrick Vollrath.

As for when the movie will debut on Amazon Prime, it remains to be seen. Given Amazon has purchased the rights for the movie, and we can anticipate that it will have a theatrical run first like other buzz-worthy films they’ve scored in the past; Manchester by the Sea and the upcoming Late Night come to mind.

Amazon isn’t the same as Netflix in regards to how they release movies they buy. Usually the films they purchase become part of Amazon Studios, but they do have full-length theatrical runs, especially if Amazon is pushing for an awards season run.

According to Deadline, 7500 was a hot commodity at Cannes as they claim Amazon outbid several buyers for the project. To me, that indicates Amazon has faith in the story and will want to ensure it gets proper exposure. It could be as long as a year or more before we’ll see the film debut on Prime to stream.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been out of the public eye for the past few years. His last starring role in a feature film was 2016’s Snowden. Before that he was most well-known for his roles in 500 Days of Summer, Looper, Inception, and The Dark Knight.

7500 looks like it could be a great move for Levitt, and should it be well-received, he may even become a contender for next year’s awards season.
