Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

More from Amazon Books

Set in Scotland in two different time periods, this first book in a series follows Claire Randall as she is thrown through time and has to learn how to live in a time completely different than her own. Leaving her familiar 1945, Claire finds herself in 1743 Scotland, a foreigner and in the middle of a war.

Her only hope in surviving lies with Jamie Fraser, a warrior, who takes it upon himself to protect her. Even though she is married in her current time, a romance buds between Jamie and Claire as they learn about each other, and Claire learns just how different her time is from the one she finds herself in.

Published in 2004, this novel is over 600 pages long, and if that’s still not enough for you, there are a total of eight books in the main series so far (plus some novellas), so you can follow this love story as far as you would like. You can find the first book here.

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley

Let’s stick with sexy Scottish men for our next pick. This is also the first in a series, but this is more set in the historical romance novel genre.

Set in 1881, this book follows Lord Ian Mackenzie. After spending time in an asylum, he’s considered mad. And he has a reputation for ruining women. He has no desire to settle down until he sets his sights on young widow, Beth Ackerly. In good historical romance form, you will follow the two as they fall in love, and have their happily ever after.

If you enjoy this book, you’re in luck. There are several Mackenzie brothers, and you can follow them in the other seven books in the series. Pick up your copy of The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie here.
