6. Artie Goodman — Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Season & episode: Season 4

What happened: Artie managed to convince Lillian to go on vacation together. During their trip, we found out he had died and Lillian now had his ashes.

Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: Be honest with me; did you really think Artie Goodman would die? He was one of the best things that happened to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in the third season and it felt off him not being around in the fourth. This was the guy who managed to help boost Lilian’s character development considerable.

While we did get more development as Lilian dealt with his ashes, it was still shocking and sad. The worst part was everything happening off screen.

5. Rufus — Timeless

Season & episode: Season 2, Episode 10

What happened: As the shootout took place in 1888, we knew that Rufus’ life was at risk. There was hope that if he could get outside he’d be safe. And he made it. Until there’s more shooting and Rufus is shot and killed.

Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: Okay, so Timeless had been building up to this. Jiya’s visions were all linked to Rufus in some way, showing her how he would die. It wasn’t surprising to find out that would all come to a head in the Season 2 finale.

What was shocking was the way it all played out.  There was that glimpse of hope that they’d avoided the death of one of our main characters. Yet, in the end, it wasn’t meant to be. Plus, shortly after we learned the show was canceled and there was fear that we’d never get Rufus back.

Thank the world for last night’s two-hour NBC finale. Now can Amazon save Timeless, please?
