Amazon Prime Video added a lot of great movies this month, so we’re counting down to Christmas with some of our favorite additions. Today’s choice is the spy thriller, A Most Wanted Man.

Amazon Prime Video is adding plenty of great movies this month. Today, they’ve added the 2014 spy thriller,  A Most Wanted Man. It was one of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final performances and you can bet it made my watch list.

In the runup to Christmas, Amazon Adviser is bringing you a movie a day to watch, all from the December releases. Day #19 is all about A Most Wanted Man.

What is A Most Wanted Man about?

A Most Wanted Man is adapted from the novel of the same name by John le Carré. An immigrant gets caught right in the middle of a war on terror. The immigrant is half-Chechen, half-Russian and Muslim. When he illegally makes his way to Hamburg, things get dicey. He becomes the most wanted man and both German and US agencies are keeping an eye on him.

I don’t want to give too much away, but after watching the recent Little Drummer Girl adaptation, I’m all in on John le Carré’s spy stories. I even have a stack of his books waiting to be read and the pile includes the source material for this movie.

Financial and critical success

According to Box Office MojoA Most Wanted Man brought in around $36 million worldwide. It isn’t a runaway success, but the movie had a budget of $15 million so it still made some money. With a largely foreign cast, it isn’t surprising that the foreign numbers were slightly better than the domestic ones.

Critics favored the movie for the most part. Rotten Tomatoes has their Tomatometer sitting at 86% for the movie. Metacritic has it sitting at a score of 73. Overall, that is pretty good. The movie probably held a little more significance with Hoffman’s passing and it being one of his final roles, but it’s still one worth checking out if the critics largely enjoyed it.
