Continuing with our Christmas Countdown, Day 16 brings us the comedic Noah’s Ark retelling Evan Almighty, now streaming on Amazon Prime.

We are featuring each movie that is now streaming on Amazon Prime this December. For Day 16, and available for streaming Dec. 15, we have Evan Almighty.

What is Evan Almighty about?

Released in June 2007, Evan Almighty is a modern retelling of Noah’s Ark. Steve Carell is Evan, a Congressman from New York and living a good life. After he and his wife (Lauren Graham) and kids move to Virginia, he is asked by another Congressman (John Goodman) to sponsor a bill that will ruin the environment and is against everything that Evan is for.

God (Morgan Freeman) then sends Evan a message that he is going to need to build an Ark to prepare for a great flood. Evan, of course, is skeptical and doesn’t believe that God has really contacted him.

What follows is a series of comical events with the materials to build the Ark magically appearing in Evan’s lawn, and Evan growing a long white beard like appearing to look more like the Biblical Noah. While Evan slowly starts believing his plight, and animals start showing up at his home, his family and neighbors start to think he’s going crazy, and in drought-ridden Washington D.C., the oncoming flood seems more and more unlikely.

I won’t ruin the ending, but you could probably guess how the movie ends, as it does follow the Noah story.

Financial and critical success

With a budget of $200 million and a box office gross of $173 million, Evan Almighty didn’t really have a successful run. It certainly wasn’t as popular as its prequel, Bruce Almighty.

With a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, Evan Almighty wasn’t that successful of a movie, critically either.  The movie was criticized for over-utilizing special effects and prioritizing them over a good story and using its talented cast the right way.
