In the runup to Christmas, we’re offering one movie new to Amazon Prime Video in December a day to watch. Day 6 is all about the timeless comedy Groundhog Day.

Amazon Prime Video has plenty of new content in December. In the runup to Christmas, when you need something to put on while you’re wrapping presents or writing out cards, the team at Amazon Adviser is suggesting one movie a day. Day #6 of the Christmas Countdown is all about Groundhog Day.

One thing we want to do is offer a movie that’s new on the streaming service this month. This doesn’t mean it’s a new movie and in this case, it most certainly isn’t. The majority of people have heard about Groundhog Day and you’ve likely seen it at least once.

If you haven’t, this is the day to watch it. You will not be disappointed.

What is Groundhog Day about?

Let’s start with an overview of the movie. When cynical TV weatherman, Phil Conners (Bill Murray), finds himself reliving the same day over and over again, he needs to figure out why. He routinely has to report about the annual Groundhog Day, but only he can remember that he’s lived this day before.

Of course, at first, he just sees the benefit of the time loop. There are no consequences for his actions, so he does as he pleases. It’s only as it starts to get to him that he realizes something needs to change.

Groundhog Day stars the sweet and funny Billy Murray, with Andie McDowell as his love interest Rita.

Financial, commercial, and critical success

The movie wasn’t as deeply cherished as it is today when it first came out. The reviews were favorable from the critics, but it was the fans that made it what it became. Of course, in terms of financial success, it was a hit. With an estimated budget of $14.6 million, it gained $70.9 million in the North American box office.

Over time, the movie has gained far more favorable reviews from critics. The fans have continued to adore it because of the deeper meaning in the film. It’s also become one of those movies that inspires many others. We just have to look at Supernatural‘s “Mystery Spot” episode and Happy Death Day to see how much people have adored the idea of the time loop.

This is certainly one to watch while you need to relax. You’ll be laughing for hours.
