Cowabonga! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are on Amazon Prime Video and it’s the movie for Day 5 of the Christmas Countdown.

Throughout the runup to Christmas, the team at Amazon Adviser is bringing a movie a day to watch. They’re not Christmas movies, but they are all movies dropping on Amazon Prime Video in December. Today it’s all about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

No, this isn’t the most recent version of the movies. We’re talking about the awesome 1990 classic right now. Part martial arts, part superhero, and part comedy, this is a movie that is perfect for the whole family to watch.

Whether you’re smart like Donnie, a leader like Leo, brave like Raph, or quirky like Mikey, there’s a turtle for you. Of course, you could also love Master Splinter and his love for his adopted sons.

Okay, I don’t need to explain this one, do I? The 1990 movie takes on the same storyline as the cartoon versions that came before it. Four turtles touch a radioactive chemical and become teenagers and the size of humans. A rat is affected by the same chemical.

And, as the title suggests, they’re ninjas. It’s up to these mutant turtles and their rat master to protect the world from the evil that is known as Shredder.

Judith Hoag and Elias Koteas star as April O’Neil and Casey Jones. Josh Pais, Brian Tochi, Corey Feldman, and Robbie Rist do the voices for all the turtles.

Financial, critical, and commercial success

Needless to say, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a success that spawned two sequels. It brought the fun of the comics and the cartoon to life. With an estimated budget of $13,500,000, it managed to bring in $135,265,915 in the United States and $201,965,915 worldwide.

While the movie received some negative comments at first, most took it for what it was: a tongue-in-cheek homage to the original comics. It’s a movie that has never taken itself seriously and that’s what works.

Children and adults love it. While it’s not won any major awards, it’s still a winner in my book.
