It’s time for a kids’ movie in the Christmas Countdown. Happily N’Ever After is the one to put on tonight.

To count our way down to when Santa arrives, the Amazon Adviser writers are putting together a list of movies to watch each night. They’re all from the list of drops on Amazon Prime Video in December. Day #3 is all about Happily N’Ever After.

As it sounds, it’s based on fairy tales, but there is a twist. This time, it’s all about the evil doers in the story trying to prevent the happy ever afters from happening. Think of it like Once Upon a Time but for kids.

And it dropped on the service on Dec. 1, which means it’s available to watch right now. Is it worth it for you? If you’re looking for something different for the kids to watch (I know I am!) then yes, this is definitely one you’ll want to put on.

What is Happily N’Ever After about?

More from Movies on Amazon

Fairy Tale Land has always been evenly balanced between good and evil. As long as the scales remain balanced, the stories remain the same. So, what happens when Cinderella’s evil stepmother decides that she wants to tip the scales and make the happy ever afters not happen?

She becomes a little power mad and decides to form an alliance with the rest of the evil in the land. If you enjoyed Shrek‘s take on the bad guys coming together under Prince Charming and the Fairy Godmother in the bar, then you’ll enjoy this take.

Freddie Prinze Jr. does the narration for the story, with Sigourney Weaver doing the voice for the mad stepmother. Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Sarah Michelle Gellar is Ella, while Andy Dick and Wallace Shawn do the voices for Mambo and Munk.

You can follow the movie up with Happily N’Ever After 2 if the kids love it so much.

Financial, critical, and commercial success

I’ll be honest with you, the critics don’t have much good to say about it. But then, this movie wasn’t made for them. It’s made for the kids and I’ll judge by what my kids think. My eldest enjoyed it. While it’s not her favorite movie, it’s one to put on when they’ve exhausted their DVD collection or other movies on Amazon and Netflix.

Maybe now that it’s on Amazon Prime, it will be watched more. But it’s certainly not going to be the best ever fairy tale movie you’ve ever watched.

Yet, it’s adorable and sweet. The graphics aren’t great, but they work for the specific movie. Sometimes, you just want something you can put on and not really think about. Happily N’Ever After is that movie.

As for financial success, it definitely didn’t see that. With a budget of about $47 million, it only grossed around $38 million worldwide.
