For those who have avoided the movie in the past, this 1971 Stanley Kubrick adaptation of the novel of the same name is a dark look into the human mind. When Malcolm McDowell’s Alex creates a gang and terrorizes the area, he completely destroys lives.
After one attack, he’s caught and imprisoned and goes through “treatment” that’s designed to rehabilitate him. The idea is to bring forward the question of whether torturous treatments are worth doing against someone who has no moral code.
The movie stars Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Michael Bates, and Warren Clarke.
Financial, award, and critical success
A Clockwork Orange was one of the most controversial movies of its time. It shouldn’t be surprising that there were talks of banning it. However, it’s a movie that gained both critical and commercial success.
With an estimated budget of $2,200,000, it managed to wow audiences in the United States, grossing $26,589,355. This was despite the movie originally having an X rating. Kubrick chose to remove 30 seconds of footage to bring the rating down to an R for a rerelease in 1973.
It was banned in Britain, upon the request of Kubrick. For 27 years it was almost impossible to see the movie in the country but rereleased after Kubrick’s death in 1999.
Overall, the ratings have been positive. Fans and critics both praise the movie for being a dark look at psychology and a misunderstood movie. This doesn’t promote violence but makes you question the morality of treatments that have the chance to go wrong.
It was nominated for four Oscars in 1972: Best Director, Best Picture, Best Writing (Screenplay Based on Another Medium), and Best Film Editing. In total, throughout the award season, A Clockwork Orange won nine awards and was nominated for 23.
