Details are coming together about what the Lord of the Rings series on Amazon will be all about, and it sounds really promising.

Amazon is taking a big swing that their upcoming Lord of the Rings series will help the streaming platform get to the next level. Amazon is committing a billion dollars to acquiring the rights to Tolkien’s masterpiece and five seasons of the show Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos will be a genre-defining series to rival Game of Thrones.

It’s a long way to go to compete with Game of Thrones, but Amazon has already topped the HBO series when it comes to the cost of production. Lord of the Rings is already the most expensive show ever made, thanks in large part to the $250 million needed to acquire the rights from the Tolkien estate.

If you’re going to spend that much money on a show on the streaming platform that’s firmly in third place behind Netflix and Hulu, you better have a great story to tell.

There is no shortage of potential storylines to work within the series that will be set well before the events of Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

And now it sounds like we know what the series will be all about, or at least, how it will start. According to TheOneRing.net the series will begin with a young Aragorn as the main character.

I am totally on board with that. The character in the movies was played by Viggo Mortensen and was quite the hero who helped Frodo and really, anyone he crossed paths with.

My expertise with Lord of the Rings resides in the trilogy of films as I haven’t read the books. But if you’re interested in more of the origin story of Aragorn and what other potential narratives and arcs his character could experience in the series, the thread from The One Ring that follows the tweet from above is really enlightening as well as educational.

There will be plenty of details still to come about The Lord of the Rings, chief among them, an official confirmation from Amazon Studios about the plot. Then, we’ll get into casting, who’s writing and directing, when production will begin and, finally, when fans can expect to watch the first season.

We know it will be sometime in 2019, but fans are already getting excited about the potential for this series and the young Aragorn news is only going to fan the flames.
