The Amazon original film The Handmaiden directed by Park Chan-wook is now on Amazon Prime Video!
The latest Amazon original film is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the United States! On Thursday, April 13, The Handmaiden was released on the streaming service and is now available to Amazon Prime members to watch.
The Handmaiden was directed by Park Chan-wook, the director of the popular film Snowpiercer. The Handmaiden premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Amazon bought the streaming rights to the film in the U.S. after the film was released theatrically in South Korea.
The film is a Korean language film with English (and other) subtitles. I know some people don’t want to watch films with subtitles, but from what we have read, this movie seems like it might be worth it.
According to a report by Variety, the film is loosely based on the book Fingersmith written by Sarah Waters. Park Chan-wook and Syd Lim are credited with writing the screenplay for the film.
Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, Ha Jung-woo, and Cho Jin-woong star in the film, which tells the story of a young woman who begins running a con on a wealthy Japanese woman in Korea during World War II while it was occupied by the Japanese.
We have not heard whether the film will be available in other markets. It is likely only going to be released on Prime Video in the United States because a report with Variety indicated that the rights to the film were sold to studios in other countries, as well.
The Handmaiden is also going to be joining our ranking of the 50 Best Movies on Amazon Prime Video! Make sure you watch more of the great films available on the streaming service after watching the film.
