6. Veronica Mars

Release Year: 2004

Seasons: 3

Creator: Rob Thomas

Starring: Kristen Bell, Percy Daggs III, Jason Dohring, Francis Copra, Enrico Colantoni, Ryan Hansen, Tina Majorino

Even though Veronica Mars technically categorizes as a mystery drama, the short-lived cult favorite weaves wit in between the noir. Starring the effervescent Kristen Bell in her breakout role, Veronica Mars follows its titular teen detective through the sleazy underbelly of fictional Neptune, California. By day, she’s your average high school wallflower. But by night, Veronica goes undercover.

You might not expect a teen series about a wannabe private investigator to be particularly funny, but Rob Thomas’ creation hinges on its comedy as much as it does its mystery. Although the tone often goes dark (like murder dark), the humorous dialogue keeps it light. Bell severely missed out on an Emmy nomination for playing the serious and comical duality of Veronica Mars.

The series, which ran for two seasons on UPN and one on The CW, ended with a cry from diehard fans. In 2014, a crowdfunded film of the same name hit theaters, proving the staying power of a loyal fanbase and a quality television series. The ultimate intersection of crime and comedy, Veronica Mars is the perfect binge for anybody.
