19. Shameless (UK)

Seasons: 11 (3 available with subscription)

Creator: Paul Abbott

Starring: David Threlfall and a massive ensemble cast

Before the American Gallagher family shamelessly survived to thrive in the South Side of Chicago, the British Gallagher clan originated the Shameless family values. If you’re a fan of Showtime’s hit adaptation, then you know and hate to love Frank Gallagher. Well, David Threlfall walked a mile in Frank’s shoes before William H. Macy gave bad a new name.

Much like the American version, Shameless sheds light on the working class culture in Manchester, England. And the story begins the same way: Fiona raises her brothers and sister, with the support of Kev and Vee, and meets the intriguing Steve. For 11 seasons and 139 episodes, the original Frank Gallagher led the pack of misfits.

The cast changed throughout its run, focusing less on the Gallagher family and more on the surrounding working class families in Frank’s orbit. Although its story went different places than its predecessor, any fan of the Emmy Rossum-led Shameless should experience the original dark comedy.
