Before he attained widespread success and praise for his FX series Louie, Louis C.K. created, starred in, and co-wrote his first eponymous television series, Lucky Louie. Although the shows are incredibly different, they explored similar themes, like parenting, marriage, and sex.

Where Louie centers on a divorced father of two with interstitial stand-up comedy segments, Lucky Louie took on the DNA of the traditional multi-cam family sitcom, complete with a live studio audience and weird lighting. Much like many of the multi-cams currently on air, Lucky Louie shared the daily life of a working class family. But since the series aired on HBO, the language and situations were much more mature.

As an introduction to Louis C.K., Lucky Louie laid the groundwork for the future of the comedian’s career as well as the outspoken tone and voice employed in his comedy. The short-lived sitcom featured the talents of frequent C.K. collaborator Pamela Adlon and a team of stand-up favorites, making these 12 episodes a familiar viewing experience for comedy fans.
