Sure, Six Feet Under is commonly known as a drama series (especially by the Emmys, for which the series was nominated 23 times). But Alan Ball’s creation, much like his others American Beauty and True Blood, employed dark comedy in the Fisher family’s funeral business.

When the Fisher patriarch dies and leaves the family business to Nate (Peter Krause) and David (Michael C. Hall), it’s up to the dysfunctional Fisher family to honor the deceased and work together to bury the dead. Six Feet Under kicks off each episode with a death, and that death results in the Fishers gaining clarity in their respective personal lives.

With its black comedy and exemplary cast (Parenthood’s Peter Krause, Dexter’s Michael C. Hall, Brothers & Sisters’ Rachel Griffiths, and many, many others), Six Feet Under’s 63 episodes are the gloomy yet humorous binge-worthy rumination on mortality with a twist of family funeral drama.
