29. Family Tree

Release Year: 2013

Seasons: 1

Creator: Christopher Guest, Jim Piddock

Starring: Chris O’Dowd

In a blink-and-you’ll miss-it type outing in 2013, HBO premiered Christopher Guest and Jim Piddock’s Family Tree for a one-and-done eight-episode run. The series differed in tone to the other comedy series on HBO at the time, but its quirky whimsy made an impact.

Family Tree follows Tom Chadwick (Chris O’Dowd) as he, well, tracks down the lineage of his family tree. When he receives a case of a deceased aunt’s belongings, he tries to put a name to the face of a man in a photograph. From there, Tom dives into the history of his family and where he came from.

You might recognize the series’ lead, Chris O’Dowd, from such popular films as Bridesmaids, This Is 40, and Thor: The Dark World. O’Dowd brings his charm to Family Tree, making the comedy series an easily digestible but delightful exploration of lineage.
