If you’re a fan of Jack Black, then you know he got his start as one-half of the comedy-rock duo Tenacious D. They have released three albums and starred in their own movie, The Pick of Destiny. But back in 1997, Jack Black and Kyle Gass created and starred in HBO’s Tenacious D, the fictional adventures of their real band.

Along with David Cross and Bob Odenkirk of Mr. Show (as well as many other hit series over the years), Black and Gass crafted crazy stories about their band and played songs that fans could later listen to on their studio albums.

Even though Black and Gass could mine story after story out of their wild band, the series only produced three half-hour episodes, which aired in 1997, 1999, and 2000. Much like Flight of the Conchords but with the “out there” irreverence of Mr. Show, Tenacious D is a must-watch of any diehard fan of Jack Black’s pre-School of Rock rock band.
