Why was Outer Range canceled after two seasons?
Outer Range is canceled. Prime Video has decided to end the show after just two seasons, and we’re not happy. Yet again, we’re left with a cliffhanger after becoming invested into a time-traveling, sci-fi series.
Amazon announced the news just before people went away for their Fourth of July celebrations. Deadline first reported the news. It’s a blow to fans as we continue to figure out what was going on with that void. Maybe someone can go through it and encourage Amazon to change their minds?
Was Outer Range canceled due to viewership?
As usual, Amazon hasn’t said why the series has been canceled. That’s become the standard thing, but it’s usually due to the cost of production and the lack of viewership.
However, when Deadline reported the news, it also shared that the series was #3 in the Neilsen streaming table for the first week all seven episodes dropped. It dropped down to #8 the week later.
It’s possible that not enough people kept watching it afterward. However, I’d argue that people tuning in right away should be what Amazon wants, especially for a binge-watch.
This series is an expensive one. It involves sci-fi elements and time travel, all of which increase the costs of a Western. If not enough people are watching, the networks will cancel the show as the production costs aren’t worth the risk.
I don’t think Outer Range Season 2 was promoted enough. I also think there’s a huge issue with the binge-release model. If Amazon wants people to keep tuning in week after week, the weekly release model is the way to do it. People keep talking about the show online and will tune in when new episodes drop. Just look at the success of The Boys and Reacher. Plus, adequate promotion is needed. If I wasn’t purposely looking out for Outer Range news, I may not have realized it was dropping when it did.
We’re seeing a lot of shows canceled after two seasons. The third season is when the costs go up considerably for streaming shows. However, it’s leaving fans with a bad taste in the mouth. What’s the point in getting invested in something when it’s just abruptly canceled?
