After seven great seasons, Bosch came to an end. Yet, a spin-off series was picked up by Freevee. Why did Prime Video cancel its series?

Usually, when a series is canceled, that’s it. The lead moves onto something else. However, when Bosch was canceled, Titus Welliver moved onto another Bosch series.

It certainly makes a lot of people wonder why the original series was canceled in the first place. What was the point if there was going to be another series? Why not just continue the current storyline? Was this an oversight by Amazon?

It was a joint decision to end Bosch

According to EP Henrik Bastin, it was a decision by both the series and Amazon to bring Bosch to an end with seven seasons. It wasn’t anything to do with the lack of viewers. Instead, it was linked to the way production costs went up and the need to be able to tell the next part of Harry’s story with a sequel series.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) was interested in running that second series. It would keep everything in the Amazon family, as well, which was great.

Bosch: Legacy has a slightly different feel

While the two shows are set in the same universe and follow the same lead, they do have slightly different feelings to them. We’ve seen what this happens with other shows that they don’t manage to continue on for that long. People who loved the original storytelling want that back.

Let’s look at Once Upon a Time, which started a new fairytale with its seventh and final season. Too many of the original characters had left and the show just didn’t have the same vibe. It felt too much like a spin-off series, and the original viewers left it behind. The series ended up being canceled.

Rather than risk something similar happening to Bosch, it was easier to cancel the show and start up a sequel series. This allowed the move to somewhere else, Harry’s change of career, and some old and new characters showing up. It’s been a success, and there is another spin-off series now in the works because of it.

At the same time, there is still some of that same Bosch feeling, which keeps people coming back. There’s no doubt that if you loved the original series, you’ll enjoy the spin-off.
