The big release on Prime Video this week is The Idea of You. This is the movie everyone has been talking about.
The movie follows a single 40-year-old mom who takes her daughter to an August Moon concert. This leads to this mom finding love with the lead singer of the band, who happens to be 16 years her junior. What will their relationship bring as it’s clear they would never be able to keep it a secret?
The movie is based on a novel of the same name by Robinne Lee. There are thoughts that the fictional band, August Moon, is based on One Direction. However, that has never been confirmed.
The Idea of You probably won’t come to DVD
There are a lot of people who prefer to get their movies on DVD and Blu-ray still. This means that you always have it to watch in your house. You’re not worried about where it could end up streaming, or if it will even be available to stream forever. Just look at how much content has been removed from streaming platforms in recent years!
The bad news is we’re not expecting The Idea of You to come to DVD and Blu-ray, despite it premiering at South By Southwest. Amazon landed the exclusive rights to the movie. There have been a lot of movies that were picked up at film festivals and then remains exclusive to the streaming platforms.
It will depend on the licensing agreements. However, more and more movies are remaining exclusive to platforms. This ensures that people keep subscribing to a platform to watch content.
Don’t expect The Idea of You on Digital
There is a slim chance that the movie will head to DVD. Some Amazon Originals do end up going to physical release, usually around a year after the streaming release date. The one that we’re sure won’t happen at all is a Digital release.
This means you won’t be able to buy or rent the movie on Digital. This is because it’s too much of a competitor to streamers. When people buy on Digital, it’s possible to watch as much as you want. You have access to that movie for as long as you have your account on that platform. So, why would you then pay a monthly subscription to watch the movie?
