RWRB 2 officially happening at Amazon (and our heart just burst from joy)

From the moment Red, White, and Royal Blue debuted on Amazon Prime Video last summer, we’ve been hoping that Amazon would find a way to bring us a sequel to its incredible adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s novel. Well, it might have taken them nearly a year, but Amazon has listened to the fans and has confirmed an RWRB sequel is officially in the works! 

While no plot details have been revealed so far, in announcing the sequel Amazon Prime Video did confirm that Matthew Lopez will return to write the script for the project alongside McQuiston. Of course, we can’t have a sequel without First Prince so it’s only fitting that Amazon has also confirmed that both Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez will reprise their respective roles of Prince Henry and First Son Alex Claremont Diaz! 

The announcement comes after RWRB became the top-watched original film on Prime in its first three weeks and generated a “huge spike” in subscribers for Amazon. 

Red, White, and Royal Blue sequel is a win for diverse storytelling

Upon hearing the news that Amazon Prime Video had ordered a sequel, I, like many fans, was overwhelmed with a wave of emotions. This was more than a movie to so many, it was a major step for representation in a genre that doesn’t exactly often celebrate LGBTQ+ love stories. 

As I’ve said before, RWRB was a light of hope for greater representation in the romance genre. It’s a film that challenges conventions and shattered boundaries giving us a love story that unapologetically embraced Alex and Henry’s sweeping romance. This was a movie that boldly declared that love knows no boundaries and gifted audiences with one of the best romantic comedies of the modern era. 

The film was like lightning in the bottle and it’s hard to recapture that kind of magic, but I have full confidence that Lopez and McQuinston will have no trouble finding a beautiful and impactful way to continue Alex and Henry’s love story. There is already some source material out there via Henry’s Chapters, but no matter where the duo takes the characters’s stories next, knowing we’re getting an RWRB sequel is a major win for diverse storytelling. 

The idea of getting to see Alex and Henry back together for a new adventure, this time proudly out as a happy couple fills my heart and has me eager to see what could be next for the pair. A royal holiday? A royal wedding? A royal, okay, I’m out of work play sources but honestly, wherever the writers take their story we know the two characters are in good hands and cannot wait to be able to celebrate Alex and Henry’s love again in the squeal!
