Do you need to watch the original Road House before the remake on Prime Video?

There are some great movies getting remakes, and Road House is the latest one. The updated version arrives on Prime Video at the end of the month, but you can already watch the Patrick Swayze version of the story.

Yes, Patrick Swayze. Okay, you’re sold even without having to look up whether you need to watch the original movie, right? Who doesn’t love to watch Patrick Swayze on their screens. The late actor is everything in all genres!

The question is whether you’ll need to watch the movie to understand the remake. You don’t, but you should still watch.

Road House is a remake and not a long-awaited sequel

The upcoming version starring Jake Gyllenhaal is not a sequel to the 1989 version of the story. Instead, it is a remake of the original. So, technically, you don’t need to watch the original movie to understand this upcoming one.

You’ll probably want to watch it, though. For starters, it’s included with your Prime Video membership, so why not watch it? It’s not like you’re losing any money doing so.

Another reason is to see what the remake is working with. There are some changes to some of the details in the story. Swayze’s Dalton was a black belt in karate while Gyllenhaal’s Dalton is a former UFC fighter. Both of them had a bad experience during their careers, leading them to leave it all behind and become a bouncer at a rough bar.

The corruption that 1989 Dalton faces is slightly different to the corruption that 2024’s Dalton will face. However, the two characters are focused on protecting their small towns, and they will be forced to use skills in the past and face their traumas to make sure it happens.

In short, you don’t need to watch the OG Road House, but you should.
