Amazon has made a decision about the future of My Lady Jane, and it’s not good. There will not be a second season of the YA adaptation.

Deadline reported the news late on Friday, Aug. 16. It’s becoming quite common for the cancellation of streaming shows to be announced on Friday nights!

This cancellation arguably isn’t all that surprising for a number of reasons. It is disappointing, though.

My Lady Jane was based on one book

The alternate history series was based on the first of three Lady Janies books. My Lady Jane follows the story of Lady Jane Grey, who in real history is known as the Nine Day Queen. After the death of King Edward VI, many protestants worked together to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne rather than the next in line, Queen Mary. She remained on the throne for nine days before Mary took the throne back. Jane was eventually executed for treason.

The book—and therefore the TV series—took a different approach. Instead of Catholics and Protestants, the series focused on the Verity and the Humans. The Verity were people with magic who could turn into animals.

The plot was still to make Jane queen. As she ended up losing her throne, she saw herself in trouble and almost ended up losing her head. The season ended with Jane getting away, where she and her husband, Lord Guildford Dudley, were able to get a happily ever after of sorts.

My Lady Jane canceled after one season

While there was some sort of closure at the end, it was clear that the production team wanted to tell more of this story. Amazon hasn’t given it a chance, though.

The series didn’t get the following that it needed to make it a profitable show. I still say that a binge release is a big part of that. People don’t have time to find out about the show to make an impact, and if it’s not watched within a month, people are going to move onto other shows.

It doesn’t sound like it is being shopped around.
