9 movies you need to watch on Prime Video on Sept. 1 2024
September is almost here. For a lot of people, that means broadcast shows are on their way back, and it could mean less time for streaming shows. Prime Video has stepped off the gas a little with new original shows in September, but there are some great movies to check out.
Sunday, Sept. 1 sees the usual big drop. While not as big as some recent months, there are more than 80 titles joining Prime Video. That means working through the list and finding the best options for the night. We have nine top picks covering a variety of genres.
9 movies to watch on Prime Video throughout September
All of these are older movies. The oldest on the list is from 1933 and the most recent is from 2016. We’re putting this list in alphabetical order as it’s next to impossible to rank movies of different genres.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
As you would expect, this movie is based on the novel of the same name. Gary Oldman takes on the role of Drakula in this version of the story, with Keanu Reeves playing Johnathan Harker and Winona Ryder as the beloved Mina.
Count Dracula was a 15th-century prince condemned to live the life of a vampire. When Jonathan Harker is sent to Dracula’s castle to finalise a land deal, Dracula sees a photo of Mina and becomes obsessed. He imprisons Jonathan and heads to London to track Mina down.
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Want a horror movie? One of the best ones out there from the modern day remains Drag Me to Hell. Alison Lohman plays Christina Brown, who has seemingly the perfect life. It all turns on its head when she attempts to impress her boss. In the process, she denies an elderly woman’s request to extend the home loan.
Well, don’t anger old women. Some of them will put curses on you, and that’s what happens to Christine. Can she prevent her soul being taken to Hell forever? Is there a way to break the curse?
Galaxy Quest (1999)
If you love parodies, then Galaxy Quest is the movie to watch. This follows the stars of a 1970s sci-fi series, which is very much like Star Trek. Decades later, they are now doing conventions. However, they end up on board a real alien spacecraft.
Now they need to figure out how to be their actual characters so they can save the alien race. What happens when their fictional adventures become real?
Meet Joe Black (1998)
There are some movies that will leave a mark on you. One of those is Meet Joe Black, which mixes genres like romance and horror.
Joe Black is Death, and he’s come to meet his next soul face-to-face. He has a need from this man. He wants to observe and understand the ways of humans. Why is it they cling to this life so much? It’s certainly a thought-provoking movie, although I will still say that the ending is questionable.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Another movie that will leave a mark is Nocturnal Animals. This movie is told in two parts. There’s the part with Amy Adams’s Susan Morrow, a wealthy animal who receives a copy of her ex-husband’s novel. She spends time reading it, and we get to see the story play out on our screens.
In the story, we follow Tony, a motorist who is on a road trip with his daughter and wife when they are attacked by three men. Tony is separated from his wife and daughter, who are both eventually found murdered. The story is one of grief, guilt, and vengeance. It’s a harrowing tale that leaves you shaken to the core.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
Let’s get back to some comedy. Sometimes, you just need something overly ridiculous, and that’s what you get with Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Steve Martin and John Candy are brilliant on screen together.
Martin is Neal Page, a man simply trying to get back to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his wife. However, his flight is rerouted due to a freak snowstorm, and now he needs to find another way home. That leads to him bunking up with Deal Griffith (Candy), who is everything that Neal isn’t. The two find a way to reach their own destinations together.
Revolutionary Road (2009)
Revolutionary Road brought Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet back together on screen after more than 20 years. They are Frank and April Wheeler, who see themselves as far-removed from suburbia’s regular life. However, they end up thrown into that when they buy a house in Connecticut.
Frank ends up in a job he hates, while April wants more than just her housewife life. The two end up planning an escape that pushes them to their limits.
The Invisible Man (1933)
Sometimes, you just need to head right back to the 1930s to see how movies were made. The Invisible Man is a must! While I do encourage you to watch the Elisabeth Moss version of the tale as well, this 1933 one is an excellent version as well.
Dr. Jack Griffin stumbles upon a drug that turns him invisible. However, there is a side effect, which is insanity. As Jack goes insane, the police head out on a mission to hunt him down, and it’s only due to Jack’s former mentor and partner that they stand a chance of catching him.
V for Vendetta (2006)
Then there’s the need for a dystopian movie. Well, Prime Video has us covered with V for Vendetta, which is set in a future after another world war. London now has a fascist government, and there are secret police after those who appear to be “threats” to the regime.
V is a vigilante who uses terrorist tactics to take down the government. When the secret police come for Evey, V goes to save her. Now Evey decides she wants to stand up and fight against this government.
