Could Amazon save CSI: Vegas?

CSI: Vegas has been canceled after three seasons by CBS. Could Amazon step in and save the day?

It’s goodbye to the Las Vegas Crime Lab once more. CBS decided to cancel CSI: Vegas after three seasons.

The series is a revival of the OG series. The first season brought back William Petersen and Jorja Fox as Grissom and Sara to help solve a case that involved one of their own. Hodges had been accused of tampering with evidence when he had been working in the Crime Lab. It was up to Grissom and Sara to figure out if he did do it and find a way to prove his innocence.

With that, we met the current members of the Crime Lab. The second season brought back Catherine Willows, who stuck around for the third season. There have been other OG cast members return as well, along with the development of the new characters.

Why was CSI: Vegas canceled by CBS?

The first question is to look at the reason for cancellation. This decision wasn’t that surprising when looking at Deadline’s report about the various shows. It was clear that this one wasn’t performing as well as hoped in the linear ratings. It also didn’t pick up that well in the delayed ratings.

With a packed schedule for 2024–2025, CBS needed to make some cuts. This and So Help Me Todd were the two shows canceled.

Could Amazon save CSI: Vegas?

What are the chances of the streamer stepping in to save the show? I wouldn’t expect there to be a save for this one.

Let’s just start with the fact that the linear and delayed viewings in the United States haven’t been all that strong. Amazon won’t want to put money into a series that may not perform that well. And it was surprising that the series didn’t perform that well. After all, the franchise has a whole has a loyal following.

Another issue will be getting the rights to the series. That’s going to be tricky with such a huge franchise that is owned by CBS TV.

We then have to look at whether it would work with other shows Amazon has. There aren’t that many traditional crime dramas on Prime Video. While the first season had a serialized element to it, most episodes are procedural in format and that doesn’t work for streaming shows. Yes, the show could develop something more serialized if it wanted to, but if this was going to be saved for streaming anywhere, it would have been with CBS’s own streaming platform, Paramount+.

So, no, I don’t think Amazon will save CSI: Vegas.
