There are arguably a fair few royal scandals throughout history, so you’ll be forgiven for wondering which one A Very Royal Scandal covers. The three-part series covers a rather recent scandal in the Royal Family history.

Michael Sheen plays Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. He plays a rather nervous Andrew, which should be the case. After all, this series will cover the night of his disastrous interview.

Ruth Wilson takes on the role of Emily Maitlis, the journalist who was focused on getting the truth. Maitlis is actually an EP on the series, making sure that this three-part story focuses on the two people at the heart of the story and not the buzz going on everywhere else.

A Very Royal Scandal is about that disastrous interview

The series will take place before, during, and just after the night that Prince Andrew and Emily Maitlis sat down for Newsnight in 2019. Maitlis wanted to get to the bottom of the reports of Prince Andrew’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.

During the real interview, Maitlis looked into the allegations that Prince Andrew had sex with a 17-year-old while at the Epstein house. That’s what we’ll see play out, as this three-part series puts more focus on the interview itself and the buildup between the two characters.

Isn’t this the same as Netflix’s Scoop?

You may feel like you’ve already watched the series. Just recently, Netflix released the limited series Scoop, which saw Gillian Anderson play Maitlis and Rufus Sewell play Prince Andrew. While the main focus of the interview is the same, Scoop opted to tell the story of the buildup to getting this scoop. It tells the story of the work that went in to create the interview.

A Very Royal Scandal puts the focus on the interview itself. It’s time to see a dramatized version of Prince Andrew attempting to prove himself innocent only to derail is life further.
