Many moviegoers know Kevin Smith for his work in the indie comedy realm with cult favorites such as Clerks, Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Chasing Amy. But in 2014, the writer-director added a new genre onto his comedies: Horror.

Since Smith’s work always takes on a certain level of quirk, Tusk, the first entry in his True North trilogy, doesn’t veer too far off the weird course. When Wallace (Justin Long) travels to Canada to interview a viral video star for his podcast, he winds up becoming the hostage of an old man (Michael Parks) with a dark story about a walrus.

Also, starring Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, and Johnny Depp, Tusk offers a different brand of horror-comedy than most movies that straddle the lines of genre. As haunting as it is strange, Tusk’s fearsome sequences and humorous dialogue stand out as one of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime Video. Just watch out for the walrus.
