44. Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Directed by: Drew Goddard

Written by: Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard

Starring: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchingson, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Amy Acker

Every now and then, there’s a horror movie with a twist. That’s exactly what Cabin in the Woods offered. At first, it looked like just another horror movie, with a bunch of twentysomethings heading to a deserted cabin only to find themselves at the hands of a serial killer.

However, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard had other plans for us. They brought us a movie packed with clichés purely to poke holes in them. The two devised a horror movie that would have us laughing and guessing which clichés would be used next, as a way to tell a new story.

That new story came at the very end. The pieces of the puzzle were put together. We understood what had to happen, but would the final girl make the sacrifices that she needed to? Would she play along with the games?

With some excellent casting and brilliant writing, there’s no doubt that this is a horror movie that you want to check out. Even critics rated this one highly, which isn’t common for horror movies.
