9. Herself (2020)
Written by Malcolm Campbell and Clare Dunne
Directed by Phyllida Lloyd
Starring Clare Dunne, Harriet Walter, Conleth Hill
There are a lot of stories out there that showcase women leaving abusive relationships. Usually, the focus is on the buildup, seeing why the woman chooses to leave and setting up the plan to get out. That’s not the case with Herself.
This movie focuses on the aftermath. The issues of social housing, the problems with the courts, and the need to find somewhere to start over. Of course, there are the thoughts of returning to the abusive relationship because it might be the easiest thing going.
Herself offers a character-driven story that offers hope and inspiration. It’s not an easy life, and the movie doesn’t sugarcoat the uphill struggle many mothers escaping abusive relationships face. Instead, it focuses on what one mother will do for her children.
And with her strength and courage comes the love and support from others. The welfare system may refuse to help, but friends don’t. Even those who are sure a plan is doomed for failure end up helping.
But will it all work out? Can this one woman see it through to the end and keep her children at the same time. You’ll be on the edge of your seat waiting to find out.
