13. Late Night (2008)

Director: Nisha Ganatra

Starring: Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow, Max Casella, Denis O’Hare

Late Night is one of those movies that tells the current workplace climate like it is but with added humor and context. We get a story of truth from Mindy Kaling’s point of view, based on when she was a writer on The Office, but we also get an entertaining movie that many can take lessons from.

Emma Thompson is excellent as Katherine Newbury. It’s clear that this role was written with her in mind, and she steps into it with an air of sophistication. This isn’t a character you’re going to like at first, but as the movie goes on you learn more. She’s complex and beautifully crafted to make her human and intriguing.

Meanwhile, Kaling is excellent as Molly, the new writer in an all-male and all-white writer’s room. Considering it’s based on real experience, there’s an added flare to the room. This is a woman who is outnumbered but isn’t afraid to speak up and speak her mind. She’s someone we should all strive to be in a workplace that’s hostile and misogynistic.

The majority of critics and audience members agree. It’s Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, making it clear that this is a movie to watch.
