18. Cold War (2018)

Director: Pawel Pawlikowski

Starring: Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Borys Szyc, Agata Kulesza, Cédric Kahn, Jeanne Balibar

Cold War has the war setting in the background, but it’s a love story at the heart of the movie. Nominated for three Academy Awards in 2019, including Best Foreign Film, the movie focuses on two people who couldn’t be more different than they are. They come from different backgrounds, different class systems, and have different political ideals.

It looks like the two shouldn’t work, but they fall in love and they want to defy the odds. Despite finding themselves in different countries and separated due to war, they want to find their way back to one another.

However, it’s not just the story that you’ll want to check it out for. This Amazon Studios movie takes on a different look and style. It’s filmed completely in black and white, making you feel like you’re in the time period. Moving across different countries, the filming and lighting come together with the costumes and settings to give that sense of the Cold War period.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Cold War is Certified Fresh. It holds a 92% Tomatometer reading, and the audience is almost just as happy about it, with 83% of people liking it. You’ll certainly want to check it out for yourself.
