Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is a character that’s absolutely synonymous with action and spy films. They’ve been making Mission Impossible films for decades at this point and they’ve all delivered in one way or another. In terms of being overall great movies and not just “great for what they are,” the latest in Mission Impossible; Rogue Nation easily takes the cake.
Right from the get-go in Rogue Nation, something’s going awry. The IMF spy organization has been disbanded because of Hunt. However, that hasn’t stopped Hunt and his team from continuing their work. Subsequently, they’re left on the run from the CIA while they try and locate, infiltrate, and essentially eliminate a terrorist conglomerate known as the Syndicate. As you’d expect, simultaneously hunting terrorists while running from the CIA results in quite a bit of action.
What Rogue Nation does so well is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously as a film. Because of that, you’re allowed to take it seriously and accept a fascinating plot with great acting and familiar characters. It’s truly a joy to watch, even after 20 years.
