Of course, the comedy film genre wouldn’t be what it is without the sports comedy sub-genre. Think of all of the movies about the world of sports that have become instant classic mainstream hits: A League of Their Own, Cool Runnings, Bend It Like Beckham, and pretty much every Will Ferrell movie from the ’00s.

But one of the enduring favorites, Major League, proved the successful marriage of America’s two most popular pastimes: Watching movies and playing baseball. Unlike most sports comedies, Major League takes place, well, in the major league. But like most sports comedies, the film tells the stories of washed up underdogs rising through the ranks to prove their new owner wrong.

Written and directed by David S. Ward, writer of The Sting and Sleepless in Seattle, Major League features an excellent cast of Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen, and in-his-prime Charlie Sheen. The film spawned two sequels, but neither of them could match the home run of Major League.
