One of the most tried and true beginnings to any movie, story, or anything of the sort is to put two people or characters together that you would never imagine doing so with, put them in an extreme situation, and see what happens. That’s exactly what happens in one of the first ever films to explore the “buddy cop” sub-genre, 48 Hrs.
Walter Hill’s film stars Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte as Reggie Hammond and Jack Cates, respectively. The two completely different police inspectors are ultimately put to work together to try and solve a string of cop killings that have been going on in San Francisco. The only catch is that the unlikely duo and heroes only have 48 hours to make it happen.
48 Hrs. is great if you look at it as an action film or if you look it as a comedy. Though some of the humor may be dated in its crassness and insensitivity, it’s still a fantastic movie that most anyone could enjoy.
