37. The Lighthouse

There are certain horror movies that will remain with you psychologically. The Lighthouse is one of those movies. Just like The Witch, Robert Eggers was able to capture everything about human psychological and make the movie feel real.
It all starts with two men heading to an island for four weeks. They were there to run a lighthouse and they will be the only two they see for those entire four weeks. Already that sounds like a nightmare, but what happens when one of them isn’t who he initially says he is?
There’s a lot of drinking and a lot of hallucinations that happen throughout the movie. You’re left wondering what’s real and what’s not, as you see these two men completely spiral from the isolation.
Filmed in black and white, you also get this sense that the movie is from the past; that it’s a classic that you’ve only just heard about. In fact, it was filmed in 2019, but the black and white filming certainly helps to create the setting for the movie.
This is certainly one of those movies that you need to watch at least once. You’ll likely find watching it more than once is better.
