38. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987)

Written By: John Hughes

Directed By: John Hughes

Starring: Steve Martin, John Candy, Michael McKean, Kevin Bacon, Laila Robins

What would you do if your plane was diverted due to the weather? You need to make it home but there are no planes into the area. So, you take other forms of public transport or hire a car, right? I’d probably hire a car if I could but Steve Martin’s Neal Page opts for the public transport. He needs to make it to his wife and kids for Thanksgiving.

On the way, he ends up bunking with Del Griffith. Bunking with strangers in this situation is common. The problem is Del is a talkative guy and Neal finds him extremely annoying.

Yes, it’s every trope thrown at you. I guess we can forgive that considering Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was made in 1987. However, while it has every single trope thrown at you, there’s an inspiration message within.

Two strangers manage to get to their final destination. They’re able to work together to find the best route forward, but do they make it in time for Thanksgiving?
