War Dogs is inspired by and loosely based on the lives and experiences of Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz, who were the subject the Rolling Stone article Arms and The Dudes written by Guy Lawson.

Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz, who are played by Jonah Hill and Miles Teller in the movie, sold weapons to the Afghan Army after they got a contract with United States government. The film tells a dramatized version of their story.
