The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 flash-fowards and what they mean
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 is packed with flash-forwards to tell us where the characters are in 1981. Here is a look at each of them.
At the time of writing this, we’re four episodes into the final season. There have been three flash-forwards to 1981 in that time, giving us a chance to see where some of the characters are. There are sure to be more as we see what becomes of the individuals.
The second flash-forward has been the biggest and most spoiler-filled one so far. The other two are about Midge’s children. Who will come up next? We’ll have to wait and see, but we’ll update this post with the next flash-forwards as they happen.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 flash-forwards
Episode 1
The premiere episode gives us the first glimpse of life after the 1960s. We jump 20 years into the future to find Ethel talking to a psychiatrist. Her brain works very similar to her mother’s when it comes to fast talking and not completely finishing her thoughts. I’m sure she hates being told she’s very much like her mother.
We find out that she is a genius, something that Midge says will likely happen in episode 4. Ethel has taken after her grandfather and says that he is the only one who really understands her. That’s not surprising if they’re both the smartest people in the room.
Episode 2
This is when we find out more about Midge and her success. We find out that she does rise to new heights and overtakes Sophie Lennon. That’s funny considering Sophie is still the big wig in Episode 4 when Gordon Ford is looking for a comedian for his show and won’t put Midge on because she’s on his staff.
We get to see all the dresses she used to wear, and we find out that she has put them all up for auction. The money is being donated to a children’s charity, something that is close to her heart.
The biggest reveal is that Midge and Susie no longer talk to each other. Both of them have become successful, but they fell out and now we want to know why.
Episode 3
This episode focused on Ethan, who is in Isreal working on becoming a rabbi. He is also engaged, and it looks like he’s a little embarrassed by his mother flashing her cash around. Midge turns up to the fields in a helicopter!
Midge is upset that Ethan only announced his engagement when she turned up. She didn’t even know he was dating up to this point.
Episode 4
There isn’t a flash-forward in this episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5.
Episode 5
We see Joel in prison in the flash-forward in this episode. He is getting the other inmates signed pictures of Midge, who continues to visit him and support him. It’s clear that the reason why he’s in jail is going to come out soon.
Episode 6
This episode was set in the ’90s for the most part, bringing us a roast on Susie. We saw a lot of characters who we’ve come to know over the years, as they all tell the stories they have heard about how Susie got to the top and what happened between her and Midge.
Of course, these are stories. We can only take their words for it. At least at the end, there is hope that the friendship can be mended.
Episode 7
We jump to the 1970s in this episode, where we learn that Midge has been quietly bankrolling Rose’s vision. Her career as a matchmaker is not going that well at all financially. Midge notes that Rose doesn’t have long left to live.
We know from the first episode that Rose dies by the time Esther is in college. Now we find out that she does die young.
Episode 8
There wasn’t a flash-forward in this episode.
Episode 9
We start with a time jump to 1965 with a surprise appearance from Lenny Bruce. He bombs on the stage, and it’s clear that we’re coming to the end of his career and his life. If only Midge knew how bad it was at this point. Susie steps in to try to help him, but when Lenny asks if Midge is there, she lies and says she isn’t. Lenny is disappointed by that fact, and I wonder if in the world of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, this is what pushes him over the edge.
There is also a flashforward to 2005. Midge is staying busy—and is not happy that her Tuesday isn’t booked. She would like to be in New York for the holidays, though. We see her walk around her large but empty home, and it’s clear that everyone in her life isn’t really there anymore. That is except Susie, who is on another continent with birds. The two are friends again, and they call each other to watch the recorded copy of Jeopardy! I love this part.
There is a flashback toward the end of the episode, too. We go back to six months before Midge’s big moment in the finale. It’s Lenny making it clear that he knows Midge will make it big, and that’s why he is getting her to come up with an autograph. Dinner is on her next time. It’s bittersweet as there isn’t a next time.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 airs Fridays on Prime Video.
