Will Amazon save the Gossip Girl reboot?
The Gossip Girl reboot has been canceled at HBO Max after just two seasons. Is there a chance Amazon will step in and save it?
Another show bites the dust. And it’s another HBO Max show. Gossip Girl Season 2 is going to be the last. Showrunner Joshua Safran shared in a tweet on Thursday, Jan. 19.
It is disappointing news to the fans of the series. This is an inclusive version of the series, and it was a fun ride for the two seasons. Now all eyes are on whether it can be saved, as Safran confirms that he is shopping the series around.
Will Amazon save Gossip Girl?
Could we see Amazon step in to save the series? At one point, Amazon tried hard to get into the YA space, but that hasn’t really happened. The Wilds was the closest thing to breaking into it, but it was canceled after two seasons on Prime Video. The long wait for the second season didn’t help at all with that, although the pandemic was to blame for that rather than the series.
Saving the series could be another push to get into the space. The show already has a fanbase, and not just from the HBO Max show. There was a fanbase from the OG Gossip Girl, which is mentioned in this new series.
However, it seems unlikely. Safran admits that shopping the show around is an “uphill battle” at this point in time. There are a lot of cancellations happening as the cost of shows goes up and money coming in from them isn’t matching that.
That doesn’t mean fans shouldn’t fight for the show. We’ve seen Amazon pick up other shows after a fight with The Expanse being the most notable. Could we see fans push Amazon into saving this one?
Gossip Girl is available to stream on HBO Max.
