After months of waiting, the long-promised features of the DJI Mavic 3 are finally here. Following three major firmware updates, the drone now boasts ActiveTrack, QuickShots, and some other AI features.

ActiveTrack and Nifty Mode

Last year, we did testing on the Mavic 3 and found its ActiveTrack and APAS 5.0 obstacle avoidance to be lacking compared to the smaller and cheaper DJI Mini 3 Pro. In Normal mode, ActiveTrack worked well as long as there weren’t many obstacles, but it couldn’t keep up with the Mini 3 Pro’s agility.

With this update, however, the Mavic 3 becomes far more confident. When used with ActiveTrack, the drone is willing to approach obstacles very closely while still following its subject. This allows for more dramatic shots and the ability to film in trickier situations.

While the extra agility can result in some great footage, it can also put the Mavic 3 in harm’s way. DJI recommends purchasing its Care Refresh accident protection insurance if you use Nifty mode frequently.

QuickShots and MasterShots

The January update introduced QuickShots, letting users create cinematic shots with just the tap of a button. The shots are pretty impressive, but not as customizable as most would like. MasterShots, on the other hand, is a more robust feature that lets users create custom shot paths and camera movements.

Verdict

Months after its initial launch, the DJI Mavic 3 is a much better drone with the added AI features. The ActiveTrack and Nifty mode allow for more dynamic and interesting shots, and QuickShots and MasterShots make it easier to create cinematic footage. While the Mavic 3 is still on the expensive side, it’s a solid option for creators.
