One of Us Is Dead by Jeneva Rose review: Try to guess the twist
If you’re looking for a whodunit with a twist of who’s even dead, then you’ll want to check out One of Us Is Dead by Jeneva Rose. Here’s a look inside the book and whether it’s good for you.
The thriller genre is full of different styles. In some books, we’re taken down a dark tale that sticks with us for a while. In other books, we’re taken on a twisty tale that is just wild. One of Us Is Dead by Jeneva Rose is one of the latter.
Don’t get confused by One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus. This is not a book that involves a bunch of kids at school. Instead, the book is about a group of rich women who think only their world matters. All we know is that one of the characters is going to die by the end of the novel, but we don’t know who.
What is One of Us Is Dead by Jeneva Rose about?
The book takes place in Buckhead, an upper city in Georgia. We meet five women, hearing the story from all their viewpoints.
The first is Jenny, who owns Glow and is the only one we know doesn’t turn up dead in the end. She’s the one telling the cops the story, but what does she know about the women of Buckhead? After all, she knows all her clients’ secrets, right?
Then there’s Shannon, once the Queen Bee of the city. Her husband Bryce divorced for her another woman, and now she wants revenge…and her husband back.
Who was the other woman? That would be Crystal, who isn’t who she says she is. What secret is this young Texan girl hiding? And if only she knew what she was going up against.
Karen is another, best friends of Shannon in a struggling marriage. She’s trying to figure out the best way to remain friends with Shannon when another member of the group is trying to force her out.
That other member is Olivia, who has waited years to take Shannon’s crown. Now she has a chance, but will she get that crown easily? What is she willing to do to make sure everyone bows down to her?
One of Us Is Dead review
This is more of a thriller meets Real Housewives. We follow a bunch of rich women, and they’re not all that friendly. In fact, some of them—like Olivia—have absolutely nothing to make you feel any goodness for them. It’s something that I liked about the book. Getting to hear Olivia’s side makes it clear that she is just an awful person, and I’m sure, like me, you’ll hope she is the one who ends up dead.
The story isn’t believable at all. It feels more like a soapy drama. However, that’s what makes it so wild and good. It draws you in as you follow these women and try to work out who is even dead, not just who killed the person.
You’ll think you have it before the end, and then everything is turned upside down. There’s a moment with life insurance is mentioned, and you’ll start to wonder if that has something to do with the eventual murder. Does it? I’ll leave you with the book to find out. This is a twisty journey that is sure to entertain for a few hours. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw it turned into a TV series.
