Thursday is one of three of Seth’s wives. Or is she? Take a look inside our The Wives by Tarryn Fisher review to see if the book is for you.

Sometimes you need a novel that is just ridiculously ludicrous. It’s important to have a book or two with a story that makes you question everything. That’s something The Wives by Tarryn Fisher offers.

Is this going to be something for you to check out? If you like twisty thrillers that makes you question the reliability of the narrator, then you’ll certainly want to give it a chance. It’s time to break down the book without giving away major spoilers.

What is The Wives by Tarryn Fisher about?

The novel follows Thursday, who is one of Seth’s three wives. She only sees her husband on Thursdays. Then there is Monday and Tuesday who see Seth on those days of the week. Thursday is happy with being in a polyamorous relationship, especially when she’s the one who is legally married to Seth.

When she learns the actual name of one of the wives, Thursday’s life is completely turned upside down. Everything she thought she knew about Seth turns into something completely different. What is he keeping from her, and what is going on with her life? Then she figures out the third woman in Seth’s life, but it only gets worse from there.

As we get into the book, you’ll start questioning Thursday’s storytelling. Just how reliable is she, and what is really going on in her and Seth’s life together?

The Wives book review

This isn’t a book if you want a serious thriller. There are some ludicrous moments. You’ll start to think “that couldn’t possibly happen,” but by that point, you’ll be hooked on searching for answers. This is one of those where you start to question everything that you’ve been told, and that’s a good thing.

You see, we only get the story from Thursday’s point of view. As she questions everything, so do we as the reader. We’re led down this rabbit hole of questions, and it’s only at the very end that we finally get the answers. You may guess some of them along the way, but you won’t get them all.

There really are no likable characters in this story, but there are characters that you’ll want to feel sorry for. After all, we’re conditioned to believe the narrator of the story.

Tarryn Fisher’s writing style is fast-paced, which helps the book’s plot. You move from one chapter to the next hooked on answers, even if you don’t think the storyline is all that believable. Does everything always need to be believable in fiction? It’s fiction, after all. I will say that I related to Tuesday’s big reveals, though.

The downside is that it uses mental illness as a plot device. However, it raises awareness of paying attention to people in your lives who are suffering from mental illness. Help the people you care about instead of placating them.
