Will Amazon save Legacies?
Legacies is cancelled after just four seasons. Will Amazon step in to save The Vampire Diaries series? Here’s what we know so far.
For the first time in 13 years, TV will not bring us a new season of a Vampire Diaries series. The CW cancelled a lot of shows on Thursday, May 12, and Legacies was one of them. It was the second of The Vampire Diaries spin-offs and the only one left on the air at the time.
The news is certainly disappointing to fans of the series and the franchise as a whole. Julie Plec talked about how the business changed underneath everyone’s feet. We know that in the past, The CW has not done this bloodbath of cancellations and instead focused on bringing final season orders for shows coming to an end.
Will Amazon save Legacies?
There are clearly more stories to tell in the world of The Vampire Diaries. Even if it is for one final season, could Prime Video step in to save the day? It’s not like Amazon hasn’t stepped in to save shows in the past. Just look at The Expanse.
It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see Amazon step in this time, though. There’s a chance that it can’t due to the past contract between Netflix and The CW. Legacies is one of the shows that heads to Netflix after its season runs in full. The contract may also include a clause that the series remains on Netflix for a set time period, limiting the chances of a show being saved after cancellation.
On top of that, we’ve learned that a lot of the cancellations had nothing to do with The CW. It was the production studios, and in this case that would be Warner Bros. TV, that decided not to continue with the shows. This gave The CW no choice, so Amazon would need to find a new production studio and that would require extra costs.
Legacies is available to buy on Digital via Amazon.
