5 best Amazon movies for the weekend

Confessions Of A Shopaholic (2009)

The romantic comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic is based on two novels in the Shopaholic series written by Sophie Kinsella.

Rebecca “Becky” Bloomwood is a shopping addict and gardening magazine journalist who gets a job at a financial magazine, Successful Savings. Her shopping habits have gotten her deep in debt, making the articles she writes a farce that could jeopardize her career, friendships, and love life.

The movie stars Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, Joan Cusack, John Goodman, John Lithgow, Kristin Scott Thomas and Leslie Bibb.

I Want You Back (2021)

The Amazon original film I Want You Back stars Charlie Day, Jenny Slate, Scott Eastwood, Manny Jacinto, Clark Backo, and Gina Rodriguez. This rom-com will delight fans of the genre as it is a perfect meld of romance and comedy.

Two 30-somethings that have been recently dumped and by a chance meeting become friends and try to navigate through their losses. When they both realize they just want their exes back, they decide to help each other break up their exes’ current relationships so they can win them back.

The Back-Up Plan (2010)

Who doesn’t love a rom-com starring Jennifer Lopez? The Back-up Plan stars Lopez alongside Alex O’Loughlin in a fun romantic comedy.

Zoe (Lopez) has given up her dreams of finding “Mr. Right” and goes to her backup plan of having a child by artificial insemination. On the very day of her procedure, she meets Stan (O’Loughlin) and comes to realize he may just be the one for her.

The film also stars Eric Christian Olsen, Anthony Anderson, Linda Lavin, Melissa McCarthy, Danneel Harris Ackles, and Tom Bosley.

You’ve Got Mail (1998)

Another great rom-com actress, Meg Ryan, stars in You’ve Got Mail. This film brings together the duo of Ryan and Tom Hanks after the greatness that was Sleepless in Seattle. This film was directed by Nora  Ephron and was inspired by the 1927 Hungarian play Parfumerie by Miklós László.

Ryan plays Kathleen Kelly, owner of the book store The Shop Around the Corner, that her mother started years prior. The store’s longevity is threatened by a big box book store called Fox Books, owned by Joe Fox (Hanks) and his family.

This film is back in the days of AOL and the early days of online chatting. Kathleen enjoys talking with “NY152,” but their relationship consists of no specifics, including no names, career or class information, or family connections. When Joe discovers it is Kathleen he is chatting with, things take a turn, and he must decide if the affection he begins to feel for her can override their business rivalry.

When Harry Met Sally… (2019)

Another Meg Ryan rom-com When Harry Met Sally stars Ryan with Billy Crystal as the film follows the pair when they meet for a cross country trip from college to NYC. They discuss many topics along the way, but one main question that comes up is, “Can men and women really ever be just friends.”

The story continues as they meet off and on over many years and eventually become friends. The story continues, but I won’t ruin anything here.

The film is directed by Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron, a paring made in rom-com heaven.
