February saw many new films added to the Amazon Prime catalog. Check out these great additions from the ’80s.

Die Hard

The 1988 film Die Hard is a classic action film that spawned a franchise of movies. Starring Bruce Willis as John McClane, the movie is based on the 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp. Set on Christmas Eve, the jury is still out on whether this is a Christmas film or not; it totally is!

McClane is a detective who just wants to reconcile with his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) but ends up in the middle of a hostage situation when Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his team take over Nakatomi Plaza.

It is a wild ride of a film that is loved by many action movie fans.

Overboard

In 1987 the film Overboard was released, and although it initially received mixed reviews, it has since become a cult classic that has been adapted multiple times.

Starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, the film follows snooty heiress Joanna Stayton (Hawn), who lives a lavish lifestyle until she is thrown overboard from her yacht and suffers amnesia. Her greedy husband Grant (Edward Herrmann) sees this as an opportunity to rid himself of his demanding wife. Dean (Russell) convinces her that she is his wife and mother of his four children.

Platoon

In 1986 the movie Platoon, written and directed by Oliver Stone, was released. This war film was a box office success, praised for the cinematography, battle sequences’ realism, and many of the performances.

Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) quits college to enlist in combat in Vietnam in 1967. Once he arrives, his idealist mindset is altered when the reality of war sets in. The unit he is assigned to ends up divided on issues that cause division among the soldiers that only adds to the ever-looming danger of their common enemy.

The film stars  Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Sheen, Keith David, Kevin Dillon, John C. McGinley, Forest Whitaker, and Johnny Depp.

The Fly

The Fly was released in 1986, and this movie is a sci-fi horror film starring  Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, and John Getz. The film is loosely based on George Langelaan’s 1957 short story and the 1958 film.

Goldblum plays an eccentric scientist, Seth Brundle, who transforms into a hybrid fly creature when one of his experiments goes haywire. His invention is a teleportation device, and he decides to use himself as a test subject but doesn’t notice that a fly sneaks in during the testing.

The film received massive acclaim for the special effects and Goldblum performance.
